What is AI API penetration testing?

AI API penetration testing uses autonomous AI agents to discover, safely exploit, and validate security flaws in REST, GraphQL, and SOAP APIs. Unlike an API scanner, it proves exploitability with evidence, tests authorization logic object by object, chains API weaknesses into multi-stage attack paths, and runs continuously as your APIs change.

Maker of tools used across Hollywood, broadcast and music

“The platform helps identify potential attack paths and highlight those that are exploitable.”

“FireCompass AI Agents have been valuable in supporting our continuous security assessment program. The platform helps identify potential attack paths and highlight those that are exploitable. It significantly reduces the time required for attack-surface discovery, initial testing, and evidence collection compared with a manual penetration-testing approach. This gives our Application Security team more time to focus on fixing and retesting. The FireCompass team has also been collaborative and responsive throughout the process.”

Why now

Annual API pentesting cannot keep up with how fast APIs change

APIs now carry most application traffic and change every sprint. Most pentesting programs still run on a calendar. The gap opens across scope, depth, and speed at once, and attackers exploit all three.

Scope gap
20% tested

Most API endpoints are never tested

  • Documented APIs get tested; shadow and zombie endpoints do not
  • Endpoints hide in JS bundles, mobile apps, and old API versions
  • Attackers enumerate everything that is reachable
Depth gap
up to 70%

API findings are noisy and isolated

  • Scanner false positive rates reach 70% or higher
  • Broken object level authorization needs real context to prove
  • Business logic abuse across API calls is scanner-invisible
Speed gap
~365 days

Once-a-year testing cannot keep up

  • Many organizations still test once per year
  • Attackers exploit new CVEs in about 3 days
  • New endpoints and versions ship every sprint
How FireCompass AI delivers it

One agentic platform. Four jobs, done continuously.

Proof: depth and scope in action

From a token in a JavaScript file to production access

No human steering. No predefined playbook. The AI agent turned a token left in a UAT JavaScript file into full production access, a path an API scanner would never connect.

Step 01 · Recon

Auth token in a .js file

The agent found an authentication token embedded in a JavaScript bundle on a UAT application.

Step 02 · Decode

Token decoded

It decoded the token and worked out which API calls and privileges it carried.

Step 03 · Pivot

Restricted endpoints reached

The agent used the token against restricted API endpoints that were never meant to be reachable.

Step 04 · Escalate

Production credentials

Those endpoints exposed production credentials, giving full production access from a UAT JavaScript file.

Why scanners miss this: an API scanner tests endpoints one at a time against known patterns. It does not read the token out of a front-end file, reuse it across environments, or follow it into production. FireCompass AI validates the whole path.

More real-world attack chains discovered by AI

Exposed .git to database dump
.git repo → DB creds → SSH root via credential reuse → internal DB
Full database compromise from one config file.
WAF bypass via origin discovery
WAF blocks (403) → origin IP found → direct payloads → WAF bypassed
Every WAF protection rendered useless.
Lateral movement via Active Directory
LDAP enum → creds in share → WinRM login → domain secrets
Full Active Directory compromise.

FAQ

AI API penetration testing, answered

What is API penetration testing?
API penetration testing is the process of safely exploiting security weaknesses in REST, GraphQL, and SOAP APIs to show how an attacker could read or change data they should not reach, take over accounts, or move deeper into the environment. A modern API pen test goes beyond schema checks and fuzzing to validate real exploitability, including broken object level authorization, authentication and token flaws, business logic abuse, and attack chaining.
How is AI API penetration testing different from an API scanner?
An API scanner checks endpoints against known patterns and reports possible issues. FireCompass AI agents discover the endpoints first, understand how calls relate to each other, safely exploit what they find, and attach proof-of-exploit to every finding. That is how false positives stay under 2% and how authorization and logic flaws that scanners miss get found.
Can FireCompass find shadow and undocumented APIs?
Yes. The agents pull endpoints from JavaScript bundles, traffic, public documentation, OpenAPI and GraphQL schemas, and older API versions that are still reachable. Undocumented and deprecated endpoints are often where attackers start, so discovery runs before and alongside every test.
Does FireCompass test for the OWASP API Security Top 10?
Yes. Testing is aligned to the OWASP API Security Top 10, including broken object level authorization, broken authentication, broken function level authorization, unrestricted resource consumption, and security misconfiguration. It then goes further by chaining API findings with web application and infrastructure weaknesses.
Can FireCompass test authenticated APIs?
Yes. FireCompass supports unauthenticated and authenticated API testing using customer-provided credentials, API keys, or tokens. Testing with more than one role is how cross-tenant and cross-user authorization flaws get proven.
Is FireCompass recognized by Gartner for AI penetration testing?
Yes. FireCompass has been named a Sample Vendor for the Adversarial Exposure Validation use case in the Gartner® Hype Cycle™ for Security Operations, 2026, its fifth consecutive edition in this Hype Cycle. FireCompass is also cited across 30+ analyst reports, including Forrester as a notable vendor in automated security testing, IDC as an innovator in cybersecurity, and GigaOm as a Fast Mover in its Radar (2024, 2025 and 2026).

Is FireCompass ranked #1 on HackerOne?
Yes. FireCompass's autonomous AI agent, firecompass-ai, ranked No. 1 on HackerOne's OWASP A01 U.S. Web Application leaderboard for Q2 2026 (captured 18 June 2026), ahead of XBOW at No. 2. Across Q2 and Q3 2026 it also placed No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 on other HackerOne leaderboards, at a running cost of about $5,000 a month. See the leaderboard screenshots and full methodology.
